Ohana means family and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

A true family has trouble saying goodbye to each other. Like any real family, my family cares and worries about each other’s well being. Our bond made it especially difficult to move my older brother into college at Holy Cross. That Saturday, bittersweet melancholy filled the air as we sent off a young man into his collegiate years.

I looked behind me to see a trunk full of furniture. Ottomans, mattress pads, a book shelf. We pulled into the parking lot already feeling sad about what was to come. We walked into Clarke Hall, one of the freshman dorms at Holy Cross. We walked up the stairs and kept our eyes pealed for my brothers room. After about a minute of searching, we found his room, conveniently right across from the bathroom. We were put to work for the next two and a half hours. Putting food in cabinets, wiping down desks, and setting up furniture was tiring, but we managed to finish just before one o’clock. With the floors wiped down, the cabinets in place, and the pantry stocked, we left the room and walked to the parking lot. Tears were shed as we said our fair-wells to the first born child. After I said goodbye to Kadin, I stepped into the front seat of the car and watched through the window as my mother embraced her son for the last time before he entered college. She then got in the car, wiped away her tears, and drove us home. This shows that we are a close family, and don’t like to leave each other. This shows that as a family, we depend on each other, and this shows that the power of family is so strong that the absence of one member can leave an impact on everyone in the family. That day, I realized that my family relies on each other to be there when times are tough.
