The Ripple Effect of Friendship
How a single act of kindness can go a long way
“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
– Walter Winchell
Sometimes, an act of friendship can spark another act of friendship. When I get complimented or appraised, it inspires me to compliment someone else. This is called the ripple affect of friendship. Not only does it happen more than you think, but it also is much more important than you think. It shows that a simple act of kindness can go a long way.
I had just woken up an hour ago, and I was not in the mood to talk. I was up since 11:30 last night working on an assignment that I didn’t even finish. I was cranky, and it was showing.
I walked into advisory with bags under my eyes and a slight pounding in my head. The headache was due to either the lack of sleep I had last night, or the thought of the homework due today that was yet to be done. I sat down at a desk and was immediately confronted by one of my best friends. His name is Gray Malitsky, and we share many interests like music, food, and the Spanish language. He walked up to me and, without a hello, said something that made me laugh hysterically. He continued to amuse me as we talked for the remainder of advisory. When it was time for first period, I walked out of the classroom ready to attack the rest of the day. I caught up with a couple of my other friends that were in my class and I tried to make there day better by talking to them. It might not have worked, but the impact Gray had left on me was enough to make me want to impact others. Because of Gray’s actions, I also finished all of the homework due that day during recess. His hilarious words put a smile on my face that ultimately led to a fun and productive day for me.
When Gray put a smile on my face, I forgot about the work, I forgot about the stress, and I forgot about all my worries. He didn’t even think anything of it. He thought of it as a simple joke, but to me, it was a hilarious joke that brought me back to reality. I had thoughts racing all around my brain, and that one joke brought to the here and now. It gave me the boost to go up to someone and try to make their day better.
This goes to show how a single act of friendship can inspire people to impact others. So get out there and spread some kindness. Your contributions won’t go to waste.
Very inspirational... Remember in 7th grade Science how we had claim evidence and reasoning? You managed to portray your point in an equally thorough manner while also being a pleasure to read. Well done.

I feel the same way before school, and a little joke can make your day, I thought you told it really well.

Great job, Oliver. This piece was great, and it really does show the power of friendship. Nothing is more important than having a friend that you can always rely on to cheer you up. Keep up the great work.

Great work. I loved the story and great Narrative voice. I especially loved this: “ His hilarious words put a smile on my face that ultimately led to a fun and productive day for me.” Great job.

Gray was a very good subject for this paragraph; he is a very upbeat person, and he seems like the type of person who could turn round you whole day. I think that you did a good job of making my follow through your mood in this great paragraph.

Wowza, A whamdammer! I love this story and the extra parts you added such as “without even saying hello” that just shows the reader how his first intent was to make you laugh. Good job!

What’s really telling about you and Gray’s friendship is that when he came in that morning, he saw how you were doing and instantly tried to cheer you up and put a smile on your face. That really goes to show how much he cares.

The vocabulary was very good in this paragraph. You also gave very specific details which I liked.

You did a great job describing your friendship with Gray in this piece, especially when you said how his joke brought you back to reality.
