A Walk in the Wilderness

The cleansing power of nature.
The earth has music for those who listen.
~William Shakespeare
If looking down on earth you would see chaos; people frantically searching for masks, families calling each other to make sure that they're safe and sheltering in place, parents watching the news and awaiting the inevitable bad news... It's all quite a lot right now, stretching our optimism and our sanity. It is times like these when the outdoors seem the most appealing to me, offering an alcove of serenity and an escape from the chaos we now live in. The outside is magical; in our world of office jobs, perpetual online content consumption and constant need for a climate controlled, air conditioned and evenly lit environment has left us missing out on the things that we evolved to have as a necessity. And, unfortunately, this habit is only being reinforced by the ever-present Covid-19 virus, beaconing us to close our doors and shut the windows. Nothing is a replacement for the outdoors, and if we could only open our minds to the experience, we could all improve our lives to an extent we could have never imagined.
Despite living on a road, there are plenty of nice cul-de-sacs around where I live, but there's one in particular that I enjoy the most; I typically venture down its winding asphalt layer upon my mom's request to exercise the dog, but more and more I've started to enjoy them for myself. There's something special about the cool, fresh air and the warm yellow beams of sunlight falling onto you and the ground you stand on. This is an actual psychological effect called "forest bathing," and it is proven to help you physically and mentally, but even if you don't want to believe the science I would at least urge you to try it. Going alone or with a pet in the wilderness is a true escape from the chaos of our current world. There are no sounds of worry or stress; there are no charts and graphs detailing the exponential threat of the virus; there is only the sound of birds, leaves, and silence. A silence that clears the mind, a silence that cleanses you of worry; a silence that only a walk in the wilderness could produce.
Sometimes our expectations and the comments of others can cloud our vision, making this situation seem hopeless and dark until it has passed. Who would have ever known such a simple act could do such wonders.
Nature and even just the outdoors is very comforting in this time, and you captured that very well in this piece

I agree with you, going outside is very special and in your own words, “magical.” And I do agree the forest and the outside world really is magical (in some places.) I think that going on walks is fun and its always great to hear what people say.

This was a very well written piece, and I especially liked how you used small references and add ons throughout the story to add a little extra “juice” to it. Great job Nice!

Nick this was a really great piece. You really dove deep into something that was simple, and something that we should all do which is to go outside and take in nature and all the surroundings. Great writing Nick!

This is one thoughtful piece, Nick. I really like that back to back parallel structure at the end of the body paragraph. It is a really nice finish to a wonderful paragraph. Also, you really hammered home your theme by mentioning it numerous times throughout the piece. Well done.

I see that nature is you way of escaping the world in its chaotic state, and I can relate to that especially after my trip in nature. Though you didn't necessarily describe your scenery, I though you did a great job taking us through your mind, which was the point of the assignment .
