A writing piece is never finished. It is abandoned. When you hit publish, it is an acceptance on your part that it is time to abandon the sinking ship--the essay is due, and you have done all you can to create a publishable post. It is also an announcement that you are a published author ready for the rough and tumble world of a fickle and demanding audience--an audience that will read your latest essay this weekend.

So many things can go wrong--yet so many things can go right, and so every published piece is filled with dread AND anticipation! It is all, however, part of the fun and excitement of being a writer.

As your teacher for this assignment, I have a shortlist of requirements that keep your essay at the "A" level:

One of the great ironies of education is the HUGE emphasis that is put on the writing of essays--as if life without essays is unthinkable. And it actually is unthinkable as long as we live in a world of thinkers.

Making an Essay Out of a Journal Entry...

      Somebody once told me that you can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure. I agree, but not wholeheartedly, for many times I find myself crafting essays out of even my most pitiful journal entries--probably because my journal is like a messy bedroom: I know what's in there, but sometimes it is hard-to-find what I need when I need it. My thoughts are scattered like dirty socks. My best ideas are somewhere under the bed, and that nifty scene about courage in the face of adversity is probably in the wash already.

But no worries, for like my bedroom--my journal is mine. Somehow I will find my best ideas, my way-cool phrasings--and even whole paragraphs that I can wear to school and call my essay.

Your Own Garden

     Where does the classroom end? If it ends in school, it dies. All we learn and practice and work to do in school fades into some blurry memory of possibilities lost in the irretrievable cloud of unknowing, We have abnegated hope and make little of our lives. We need to live out a new paradigm of learning—to extend the classroom and make our lives universes of learning, to actually, deeply and truly expand above and beyond murky and distant horizons, and to grow when and where we grow best, and that, I can say with confidence, is rarely accomplished in the confines of the classroom.

     Writing well requires a writer to write with courage, confidence and honesty. Your journal is your place to live fully within yourself as a real and committed writer who practices these ideals. Journal writing is simply a way to give form and substance to your inner thoughts. It is simply a way for you to be completely you—not an expectation driven by academic expectations directed and choreographed by me.

     Through better and worse, happy and sad, hilarious and serious, we are all wrapped up and boxed at Fenn School--so we may as well write about it. Thanks for your first efforts at posting on your blog.  After I write this, I will take a little trip of my own down Freshman Blog Boulevard and reward myself with some good reading. You should do the same! I have yet to meet a person who doesnt like a good and sincere comment left on their blog posts.

     Every journey begins with a first step; in the same way, every writing piece begins with that first slurry of words that point you (as the writer) and your readers (as your audience) in a specific direction. When you get out of your car tomorrow, you will bbe faced with a choice: you either go in a clear, confident and powerful direction, or you will float aimlessly and listlessly, buffeted by winds and forces you feel are beyond your control and unsure of what to do and how to do it.

It is an honor for me to be teaching the entire 9th grade. I expect a lot, but I also hope I will give a lot.

I want to give you the chance to lead a truly literate life--meaning you will be a "real" writer in every sense of the word...

I want to give you the chance to read great stories, profound poetry, amazing novels, insightful essays, and powerful journals...
