Give me six hours to chop down a tree
and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.

Every journey begins with a first step; in the same way, every writing piece begins with that first slurry of words that point you (as the writer) and your readers (as your audience) in a specific direction. When you get out of your car tomorrow, you will bbe faced with a choice: you either go in a clear, confident and powerful direction, or you will float aimlessly and listlessly, buffeted by winds and forces you feel are beyond your control and unsure of what to do and how to do it.

Freshman year is a biggie; it is like the start of real life. Everything you do, every choice you make, and every accomplishment you plant behind you matters--it all matters... Fenn is a comfortable and welcoming place, but you are almost out of the nest, and you will either fall or fly.

Luckily, this is all good stuff to write about.

Your first assignment of the year is to write a journal entry (or several entries) that tells the story of you beginning your Freshman year of high school--and your last year at Fenn. Write about your dreams and hopes, your anxieties and uncertainties--but most of all, write about the path you plan to travel and how you plan to stay on that path.

Thoughts are only made real when put into words, so write thoughtfully. Write until you complete what you need, want and should write.

This is the life of a true writer.
