People are not Poetry

You can Write for Hours on Hours

By Ernest Hemingway

You can write for hours on hours,
Of all the things that you wish you could be,
But the truth of the matter is simple,
People are not poetry,
And I know that you wish you weren’t awkward,
The sweet words could roll right off your tongue,
But your time here’s too short just to worry,
How each single sentence is strung,
It’s okay to be rough around the edges,
To be bruised up and broken and scarred,
But it’s not okay to let people tell you,
That it’s reason to change who you are,
Your hair doesn’t always sit neatly,
The way a poem sits so neatly in lines,
And sometimes you might feel like a word,
That nobody has learnt to define,
You might not be a star that lights darkness,
Or a bird that can teach us to soar,
But it’s okay because you are too complex,
To be crammed into one metaphor,
It’s okay not to know what you’re doing,
Since your feelings don’t have to all rhyme,
Though a poem once complete is eternal,
You have the freedom to change over time,
You’re much more than can ever be written,
There is no title to say, “This Is Me”,
Because people are not poetry

Imperfections

It is impossible to be perfect. people can not always be perfect and rewritten like words. Unlike poetry, every person has their own imperfections. People are still more than any words can describe you as. in the poem, You can Write for Hours on Hours, by Eric Hanson it talks about the imperfections of people compared to poetry. Poetry can be rewritten and fixed but people can not. When you get imperfections told to you it can often be disheartening, but it can actually be very helpful. When you know your problems you have done the first step to fixing them. Understanding that you will never be perfect is also super important. If you get stuck on trying to perfect one aspect of your life everything else will fall short. Improving every part of your life knowing that it will never be perfect is the best you can do for yourself. This poem does a super good job explaining this and putting it in a poem. This poem is also written by Ernest Hemmingway who is a great writer and is known for underlying themes in some of his books. This poem clicked with me and I knew it would be my choice because of its important themes.

perfections

I chose the poem, You Can Write for Hours, by Eric Hanson (not Ernest Hemingway). One of the reasons I choose this poem is because of who I though the author was. We just read, The Old Man and the Sea, which was  written by Hemmingway and I really enjoyed that book. I enjoyed his style of writing and he had many underlying themes of the book, so I decided to look for poems written by him too. I decided on this poem because it has a strong meaning that I think a lot of people should hear. It talks about the imperfections of humans compared to poems which can be perfect. It resonates with me because I often try to be perfect in sports and in school but I need to learn to use my “imperfections” to my advantage. I chose a good poem for me and I am going to have a good time learning it and uncovering its deeper meanings. As I have matured over the years I have noticed that I have been finding better and better poems. I have also been able to perform them better so I have high expectations for myself this year. Phew, I am done. I think I did a really good job preforming it. I was really nervous but I had been working on memorization and how I spoke for a while so I was confident. Fitz really liked it which is good. In one hand I want to go to the semi finals but on the other I’m happy with my grade and not having to worry about preforming again. Overall I am super happy with how my poem turned out and I know that I will remember this poem for a ong time.

I really liked your analysis and reflection. I really liked your reflection because you described how you liked the underlying theme in the piece. What I liked in your analysis is how you talked about how we should value our imperfections. Overall, not very frugal, very good!

Justin, your poem and preforance really made me think deeper than any other poem. The choice was one of a kind and its fun to hear something new. I love the beggining of your reflection and how honest you were about why you chose it.

Well done Justin. I really liked your video and thought you chose the perfect images to match the lines of the poem. I also thought you had a very strong presentation and you defiantly mastered your poem. Great job.

Justin, I truly appreciated the way you wrote about imperfections in your analysis and how everyone will always be imperfect. Also your presentation was flawless as far as I could tell. Awesome job!
