Giving Thanks to my Family
Reflecting on them and how they impact me
Text to Podcast:
Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for the things you have. That may include certain experiences that you’ve had, things you own, pets you take care of, time off from work, time off from school, or people you are surrounded by. For me, Thanksgiving is about being around family and thinking about how grateful you should be for their support, help, fun and kindness. My family includes my mom, she is the parent who has fun, but lays down the law when she needs to. My dad, he is the one who will support me in sports and play catch with me whenever I want to. My brother, he is the one who will play madden with me, ask me what I did during my day, or gives up the TV in the basement if I want to hang out down there. My sister, she is the goofy one who finds something fun to do with me if I’m bored. And finally my two dogs. First, Lewis is a golden retriever who is extremely lazy except for when he is trying to get a pet from someone. Second, Pepee is an italian greyhound chihuahua mix who lays in bed all day, but when he gets out of bed he loves to speed around the yard and chase his ball while flying at the speed of light. My family is a group of people that I believe lean on each other, and help each other through tough times and encourage each other during the good ones.
In 7th grade I had a take home test for American Experiment (Social Studies) that I had two weeks to take. However, at the same time I wanted to play a game that had come out during those same weeks, which I had been waiting for the whole summer to play. So, I decided to try to blow through the test as quickly as I could to play the game, and this obviously hurt my grade. I gave either short answers or incorrect answers which ended up with me receiving a D for the test. That was the only test and decently sized assignment for the term, so I got a very bad grade in that class. My mom got on my back for that, and she told me that I should’ve been focusing more on my school work rather than a video game. This experience helped me move forward in that class and I ended up getting an A in that class the next term and an A- in the term after that. This was one of my first experiences really letting my parents down, and it turned out to be a great motivator to try to do better the next time.
During the summer me and my mom decided to go down to a friend’s house in Cape Cod. We ended up going to their private beach, and my friend Jack brought his skim board. He made it look so effortless, so I wanted to try to do it, and a tried it a couple of times before I fell on my leg with all of my 160 lbs—and broke it. After that, I went to the hospital to get X-Rays and for people to push my leg back together (they literally push it together and put a cast on it). For the rest of the summer I was stuck with a cast up to my hip and broken leg sitting in the basement, but that experience wasn’t all bad. I got to be my naturally lazy self (without being judged), I had friends over regularly, my parents checked on me a ton, I got to watch a lot of movies, and my parents would bring me my food because I couldn’t carry anything with my crutches. Out of all of those things I would say I’m most grateful for the food and movies. Overall I’m just grateful to be around the people I’m around, and grateful that they put as much time into me as they do.
