The Call Of The Wild Essay

Imagine your house where you feel safe and secure. Now picture you being ripped away to a far off place where only the things that adapt and are built tough survive. Buck, a dog in The Calk Of The Wild goes from a judges house to a sled dog in Canada. It make you wonder. How tough can one dog be?

Toughness is a big part of life, and Buck in “The Call of the Wild” has to be tough, and he must be strong in his new life in the Klondike in order to thrive as a sled dog. After Buck is kidnapped by some sled dog trainers, he is brought into a new world where he must adapt to his surroundings and become more tough than Buck has ever imagined. He experiences immeasurable pain from the amount of beatings and whippings he gets throughout the first and second chapter, and this new type of treatment persuades Buck to become a tougher dog in general. In chapter 6, John Thornton is bet a large amount of money if Buck can pull a 1,000 pound sled 100 yards, and Buck must be as tough and hardworking as he can be. “His great chest was low to the ground, his head forward and down, while his feet were flying like mad, the claws scarring the hard-packed snow in parallel grooves.” (The Call of the Wild Chapter 6.) Buck realizes that he must be tough to survive as a sled dog. He notices that after he is brought into the Alaskan wilderness, he releases his inner savagery on the other sled dogs as he fights his way to victory multiple times. He must be strong, and persuade through all of the pulling of the sled. Finally, he expresses his toughness when he wins John Thornton 1,600 by pulling a 1,000 pound sled—by himself— 100 yards. Buck has been and has needed to be tough to survive in the Alaskan wilderness.

Adaptation will help you as it helped Buck survive as a sled dog. Adapting to your surroundings is essential. Buck must adapt to his new life as a sled dog in Alaska after he is kidnapped by some sled dog trainers and brought into a new world. Buck is living in a small town with his owner and his owner’s sons. He is a spoiled dog that gets treated well and never has to worry about anything. One day, Buck is taken away from his nice, easy going, and dreamlike home, and brought into an unforgiving, violent, and hostile world. “Never in all his life had he been so vilely treated, and never in all his life had he been so angry. But his strength ebbed, his eyes glazed, and he knew nothing when the train was flagged and the two men threw him into the baggage car.” Buck comes to realize that he must adapt to survive in a new world. He realizes at one point in his life he would need to accept some sort of change, and this was his time. After he fully adapts to his new life as a sled dog in Alaska, he whippings he gets are much less painful than when he was first whipped. And after all Buck has been through, adaption helped Buck get through the hardest times, even when it seemed impossible to keep going. 

Distain doesn't always lead to hatred. The Call Of The Wild started out as a book that I had distain for because it was another book to read. While I had distain for the book at the start, it showed me that toughness and adaptation will help you survive. The Call Of The Wild made me want to pull my eyes out (like all books). My eyes have been saved as the book taught me to care about what books have to offer. I learned that it doesn’t matter if you come from a wealthy background or a poor background. Everyone has the ability to adapt and be tough. We can all be tough, it’s just about working at it.

Buck has to fight to survive. He must make it out of cold frozen wastelands, battlefields, and the fight with a visions dog for the leading spot in a dog sled team. What will bucks next adventure be?

If you give your all at something you will succeed. Through the tunnel taught me that if you want something, you have to give it your all. Reading through the tunnel challenged me to work harder in my daily life. I am now more engaged in what I’m reading and not just trying to finish it on time. I now have emotions like fear when something is happening in the book that is bad. I thought that this book would be exiting which is a first. I learned that books can be fun sometimes but you have to find the right ones. I can now highlight more words and phrases. I can now pick out words that i can use in a sentence and words that challenge me to work harder. I fell better when we have this sort of assignment because i believe in myself and believe that i can work and come out with the grade i believe i deserve. I learned that reading could be fun. I figured out how to right a compelling sentence. I am now confident that i know how to pick out words, phrases, and themes in a book. I would normally have to ask for help with these assignments and get help picking out information. I will always have a resentment of books, that’s just how i am. I am now though, feeling better about books and reading more than i would have earlier in the year. Reading through the tunnel made me think that books weren’t as bad as i thought they were.
