“Why are the people rebellious? Because the rulers interfere too much. Therefore they are rebellious.” - Laozi

I think we all have a little bit of Tom Sawyer in us. Whether it be we get into trouble often or we like talking smack to other people or even just as simple as we run our mouth sometimes, I still think everyone can be a Tom Sawyer sometimes.

Throughout the first chapter, I have noticed a few themes with our main character. From when he was describing the boy with the nice outfit, it made me think that maybe Tom was a little on poorer side. Another theme I saw somewhat often in the first chapter was that when his authority was challenged or questioned, Tom would find a way put down that question or challenge like when he fought the new boy or when he defies his aunt, skips school or wants to fight Sid. A quote I think shows this well is, “Within two minutes, or even less, he had forgotten all his troubles. Not because his troubles were one whit less heavy and bitter to him than a man’s are to a man, but because a new and powerful interest bore them down and drove them out of his mind for the time—just as men’s misfortunes are forgotten in the excitement of new enterprises.” This quote really embodies how Tom can put down these challenges rather than prove one of the specific examples.

A time in my life when I was Tom Sawyer was two summers ago on Martha’s Vineyard. Me and a few friends were playing odds are (basically you say a dare and the person you dare says odds are 1 to … and you both say a number between 1 and the specified number and if you say the same number, they have to do the dare). So the Tom Sawyer in me wanted to see if Brendan Peters was man enough to do my dare if he lost. Wouldn’t you know, we said the same number and Brendan had to ride his bike into the harbor. This was a time in my life when I was a Tom Sawyer.

So far I have loved the book and can’t wait to read more. When I’m reading, I love making connections between the characters, myself and people I know .
