Daily Journal #3
Themes in The Odyssey Books I-XII

Slam Poem

There’s a saying that you hear

every once and a while.

“There’s more to life than

blank”

That’s true for anything

Fill in the blank with whatever you could think of,

and the statement will be true.

“There’s more to life than blank”

It struck me when I was reading Lord of the Flies

I hunted through it,

 like Jack in the woods

Looking for symbols and themes I was warned to watch out for

I sat on my bed,

my eyes creeping along the pages

So very close to the book’s end

That’s all it was then

The end of a book

I was assigned to read

But that end was like no other end of a book

That was the only book where I was excited to share what I thought

The only book where I had something to say by the end of it

Most books leave me speechless,

a spectacular crash of an ending, like fireworks going off in your head

But, it just ended

Suddenly as a bullet wizzes through the air it ceased

What now?

The only thing left to do was look for more.

In a book that shouted meaning and whispered it at the same time

Find more meaning,

Find more symbols

Find more everything

I wandered over to Litcharts to look for what I missed

The answer was a lot

The religious aspects soared over my head like a jet plane

I had absolutely NO clue what the ocean meant

And I still am barely grasping at the World War 2 analogy

But, it’s not really about symbols

Lord of the Flies did a great job with it’s allegory

But there’s more to it, hidden deep within it’s caverns of words

it taught me there’s more to everything

Every book, every movie, every story, every life

More than what is there

More than our objects, our settings, our characters, our themes

Like the instincts that still drive us,

like a stick sharpened at two ends,

only revealed in the baking sun

There is more behind us than we’d like to admit

There is more

This book taught me to search hard for that more

Those hidden meanings way down deep

Or closer than you might think

You have to always look for more

But there is no Litchart for life

There is only more

Fitz...

This is a great slam. I'm sorry I just got to it. I love how you wave Lord of the flies into the narrative that gives us a guide for life.

Fitz...

I could've sworn I read a journal entry from you yesterday. Did I miss something?
