Lyricist and one hell of a character
”I’m sorry if I hurt you. I’m sorry if it got that bad. I’m sorry if I can’t help you. Somebody should of had your back.”
-Oliver Tree
Some songs can just connect to one’s soul. I can relate to this incredibly. One artist who I connect with is Oliver Tree. Oliver Tree is a 26-year-old songwriter and singer. He has almost 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. I discovered him about 3 years ago. The reason I like his work so much is because of all of the meaning behind it, and his elusive character. Almost every single song he has writing has deep meaning to it. Like for example, Miracle Man, to my best interpretation, is about how you can’t spend your time waiting for a miracle. You have to get up and do something.
Adding to the deep meaning, his songs are rhythmically diverse. Multiple patterns overlap to create a different experience than other artists. One thing that shocked me a little bit was how he observed to be very rude, demanding, and spoiled in almost every non-music video of his, maybe even referencing his line from Alien Boy: “I talk a lot of sh*t so you won't believe me.” While this behavior shocked me at first, I quickly realized it is just an act. From the snickering crew members in the background to the character breaks, the charade falls apart. It is an act to separate him from others. This character also adds another layer to Tree. By only showing his character to his audience, he is creating more of a persona, and fueling the attempts to find the real Tree. Oliver is important to me in my life because his music can help me through hard times, or even relax me through good times. His ability to be a lyricist can top the charts, but all I can feel is relatability.
I understand the importance of relatability in celebrities and your piece depicts it perfectly, Sometimes fame can get to peoples heads, and I’m glad that didn't occur here. I enjoyed the straightforwardness of this piece, keep up the good work!
